Hawaii Marriage License

Getting Your Hawaii Marriage License

First you must fill out the Hawaii marriage license application online, and prepay it; they will give you an eight digit Locator ID number and you will need to bring that number with you to show them along with your photo IDs when you go together to pick up the license at the State Department of Health. They are at 1250 Punchbowl downtown across from the Capitol Building on the corner of Beretania. The license is good for one year from when you apply for it and thirty days after you pick it up.

The State Department of Health is open from 8AM to 3:30PM Monday through Friday. It is first come, first served or by appointment, but if you go in early enough you will be in and out in ten minutes. I will include directions in Final Details when I send you the contract.

The application will ask for the first, middle and last name of your biological father and the first, middle and MAIDEN name of your biological mother. One of the reasons for this is to provide information for future generations who may be tracing their lineage. As I explained to one of my brides, some kid in 2525 who is researching her lineage may be working on something important and need to have the biological information of her heritage. So when you are filling this out, give a silent nod to that curious child of the future, who will someday look for, and find, you. 💗

If either of you have ever been married before, you just need to know the date and county where the divorce was final, if it is within 60 days of your new marriage, bring documentation. No blood tests or birth certificates are required.

A word about receiving your official marriage license from the State Department of Health: I will go online after the ceremony to validate the marriage and send you a link the same day. You will be able to view it within three working days, after it has gone to vital records, and you will receive the official marriage license in the mail usually within two weeks. If you need it sooner, or wish to pick it up, there is a certified copy request you may fill out online and submit. Once it has gone to vital records you can go down to the State Department of Health and pick it up. Here is that link:
